Classics-On Video

I thought that this movie was okay considering that I don't really like John Wayne movies that much. I thought that it had a good ending and some good gun scenes during the chase. I also liked how they were never really sure where the enemy was the entire time. Some westerns show the men running from an enemy that they can see at all times. The only thing that I got confused with some of the time was who was shooting who in certain scenes.

Batman

I thought that this movie was just a tad above stupid. I couldn't quite figure out the audience that they were going for. I think that they may appeal to children because children love super heroes so much but then I also think that they may sort of be appealing to adults because of some of the language used. I don't know how it was thought of at the time but I think that it sort of made me laugh a couple of times, especially at Robin's comments. I think that it would be a good movie for children to watch.

The Enforcer

One of the Dirty Harry movie where Harry finds out the women can be real police officers. After beginning the movie skeptical he finds that his woman partner will risk her life for him in the end. This action drama is better than some of the Clint Eastwood movies that I have seen. I think that Dirty Harry is a good cop and loved the scene in the beginning when he drove the car into the building to stop the man holding the hostages. This is definitely a step up from the last Clint Eastwood movie I saw The Gauntlet.

The Gauntlet

I thought that this movie was okay but not much more than that. It has a good idea but the ending is terrible and some of the action scenes lack any kind of feeling. The one scene that I can think of is when Eastwood is on the motorcycle and the helicopter is just unable to shoot him for about a five to ten minute period of time. It is just too long. The other scene that is stupid is the ending. The people get up to the building and than shoot the guy and then when Eastwood gets up the movie just ends. Not really any climax.

Dr. No

I thought that this movie was pretty good. What I really liked about it is how no scene was too long. The movie kept going and plenty of things happened. I thought it showed a man who was very resourceful and very lucky with the ladies. James Bond is almost a role model for many men. I thought that the movie was very realistic and didn't get caught up in too many unbelievable action scenes. Some of the more modern James Bond movies fall into that category. Overall Rating: 7.6

The Big Heat

I thought that this movie was pretty interesting even though it had some very clear flaws. I thought that it was very clear who killed his wife even if he did not know exactly who the person was he knew who was behind it. I don't understand why he decided to kill one of the guys and not all of the people involved. I thought that this movie kept your attention well and it had a good message. It talked about how cops at the time could be bought off by powerful people and this movie shows a man who stands up for what is right. Overall Rating: 6.8

One in a million

This is a movie about a girl who is an ice skater and she is good enough to be olympic champion. She falls in love with a visitor at her father's bed and breakfast. She goes on to win the olympics and star in a show at Madison Square Garden. What I thought was really stupid about this movie is that the father would not let his ice skating daughter go to New York initially but then when all the controversy about her title was over he thought it was okay. Overall Rating: 5.1

The Flame of the Barbury Coast

This John Wayne movie is a little different than most John Wayne movies in that it takes place in a city. John Wayne still plays the same sort of role but he has traveled to San Francisco to win over a girl and set up a business. You find out that the girl is really the flame of the barbury coast and everyone loves her. When the real flame strikes she is injured and the two men that care for her most are there for her. This movie had a couple of good gambling scenes and a decent love story but the bad guy just did not seem so bad. Overall Rating: 5.4

The Godfather

One of the classic mob films and overall films ever. It is long and boring
for the first 45 minutes. It then becomes a killing spree where you are
scared
someone will killed in every scene. In this movie you can never be sure who
will get killed and when. The best thing about this movie is that it doesn't
build up to an ending. You know that there will be more of this story to
come. By far the best of the Godfather movies. Overall Rating: 9.6

The West Point Story

This movie about a choreographer from Broadway is trying to shape up a show
at West Point Academy. To do this he must become a cadet. He must persuade
one of the cadets to become a star. When the time comes the choreographer
has a change of heart and develops into someone who is worried about the
show only and what's best for his new friends. Overall Rating: 5.2

The Sound of Music

This is a great musical about how a lady moves into a house to take care
of a family of kids as their nanny. At first it is hard for her but she
eventually became friends with them. This movie takes place during World
War II and that becomes relevant later in the movie. The best part of this
movie is the music and that is what makes this movie a classic. Overall Rating: 8.2

The Wizard of Oz

This is the classic movie where color and black and white meet. Judy Garland
stars in this story of a land far away. By the end you find that she was
only dreaming. This movie has been made extra famous as people watch it
with the Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon album. It goes perfectly the
first time through the CD. Overall Rating: 8.0

Vertigo

This is an Alfred Hitchcock movie that is very
bizarre. Jimmy Stewart has gotten involved in a plot
of another man to kill his wife. He uses Stewarts
fear of heights to pull off this crime. At the end of
the movie Stewart defeats his fear of heights and
makes this woman feel guilty for what she has done.
Then when the nun comes up the steps the girl couldnt
live with herself for what she had done and killed
herself. This movie does a great job of not revealing
itself until the end. Overall Rating: 9.2

The Maltese Falcon

I thought this was a great classic. The falcon as mysterious and was left open to expectation about what it was. This falcon causes murder and betrayal. Humphrey Bogart is sensational and he is between the cops and
the villains. The search for this falcon makes you wonder if the falcon is worth it. You never really can get a good feel on any of the characters. Overall Rating: 8.8

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

This movie was very interesting and amusing to watch but I didn't like how it ended. The movie shows how being fun and out of control can be considered insane. This free loose cannon becomes attached to the other patients and
decides to stay with them. His carefree behavior leads to him becoming one of the dependant patients. The chief can not see him like that so he kills him. His desire to break the rules keeps him in the hospital while the chief plays it calm and escapes. Overall Rating: 8.6

Jaws

Jaws is the classic movie about an animal that everyone is scared of. People may have become much more scared of Sharks since this movie has come out. This is one of the most realistic horror movies of all time. Jaws was believable which helps to make the people fear the shark more. It almost had the same sort of idea as Moby Dick in the search for the whale. Overall Rating: 9.3

Godfather 2

I found this to be very slow and one of the longest movies I have ever seen. It was definitely not the best of the Godfather trilogy. I didn't understand the point of showing young Vito Corleone. The movie makes Al Pacino look like an asshole and he doesn't kill enough people. I not only thought this movie was slow but I found it to be fairly stupid. He should have killed the people who were messing with him right away and not at the end. Overall Rating: 7.0

The Shining

This movie lived up to be the classic that it is. Jack Nicholson plays the perfect crazy person and the setting fits perfect. The questions I have are why Jack Nicholson is in the picture at the end? Another question is what is the point of the little boy's secret friend. The man has no secret friend so why does the boy and why does it take him over? I believe that everyone becomes crazy not just Nicholson. This movie is much more in depth than many modern day movies. I think Jack Nicholson being in the picture symbolizes that he is part of the hotel now. Overall Rating: 9.3

American Graffiti

This is one of the original teen movies. Many people now love movies like Can't Hardly Wait and Dazed and Confused well this movie is what they copy those after. I thought that the cast was great and it was cool to see many of these people in their younger years. It is the story of a group of teens over one night. Nothing really special just enjoyable and you can reminisce about what it was like living then or when you were that age.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

This was a very entertaining western sort of movie. A lot more entertaining than most westerns. I think that the two actors were very good and mixed in a good bit of comedy into this western flick. I especially liked how they were still joking up until their death at the end of the movie. This story is about a couple of stubborn bank robbers who even when they are on the run they never really get totally shook up. They believe they can get out of anything.

Star Wars

There isn't much to say about this movie. George Lucas started the beginning of a craze that has had people buzzing for the past 25 years and counting. I think that this movie is good because it is a tale that is absurd but not too absurd that you don't believe it. At the same time all of the characters have human qualities which make it sort of like a cartoon. To this day 25 years later the costumes still do not look fake. This is a movie about so many things beginning with the force and ending with love adventure and family. Good on all levels. It would win movie of the year in 2002.

Never Give a Sucker an Even Break

I thought this movie was sort of a mix between an Abbott and Costello and a Three Stooges movie. I thought that it reminded me of the Abbott and Costello movie Jack and the Beanstalk and I thought that it reminded me of the any Three Stooges episode. I think that this movie didn't really hae much of a point but had a couple of parts that were pretty funny. It is almost just a nonsense movie about a girl who really loves her uncle and her uncle is sort of a loose cannon. Overall Rating: 5.0

The Unsinkable Molly Brown

I liked this movie. I thought that it was good because it has some songs in it like a musical but the music does not take over the entire movie. The songs come at appropriate times and are short. I also thought that this was a good inspirational movie and a good love movie. I thought the ending was very sweet and it even choked me up a little. In the beginning of the movie Molly Brown thinks she knows everything she wants and she learns that what she really wants she finds very easily. Overall Rating: 7.5

2001: A Space Oddysey

This was an amazing movie that seems to make almost no sense at all. It still keeps you watching to wonder what the hell it is that you are seeing. I was sure that the movie did have a great message only I did not pick up on it. After the man gets rid of the computer I am completely lost. I think that it is good how it shows him aging and how he is watching it all or at least I assume that. It is definitely a defining movie for Stanley Kubrick and one that I may continue to watch until I figure it out. Overall Rating: 9.0

Hombre

This is a movie about a white apache indian who is traveling on a stagecoach and the stagecoach gets taken over by a couple of thieves. The indian and the other passenger on board must come together to get back there carriage so they do not die in the dessert. The only way to do that is to kill the other. This high class of citizens may not be up to that. The indian must help them even though they did not even want him coming along. Overall Rating: 5.5

The Madwoman of Chaillot

This movie had a good moral but was not that impressive as a movie. The story moral is that happiness is not judged by money. There are many things that are more important than money and the world is falling to pieces because of people that get too caught up in greed. The madwoman could have been a little more mad. They would be mad about one thing and then perfectly genius about something else. The is the major flaw of this movie. Overall Rating: 4.6

The Family Jewels

This Jerry Lewis comedy about a little girl whose father dies. She has to
choose one of her uncles to be her new father. Jerry Lewis plays eight
different roles in this movie including all the girl's uncles. This movie
is funny especially the uncle that is the photographer and the uncle that
is the pilot. All the uncles and humorous. Overall Rating: 5.6

Cabaret

A great story about a singer who falls in love with her gay best friend.
He in turn falls for her. This movie goes through the trials of their
relationship
as well as another relationship during the time of the Nazi's. The story
takes place in Germany and one of the couples is Jewish and it effects their
relationship. This is a story about a girl who cannot give up her freedom.
This story and the story conflict about the Nazi's and the Jews are the
theme for this movie. Overall Rating: 7.9

North by Northwest

An Alfred Hitchcock classic that is a good mystery movie. This is one of
the better Hitchcock classics. I thought it was good that the girl is the
special agent and I like how they keep it hidden from you like they keep
it hidden from Cary Grant. I thought that the ending was good. This movie
kept you watching and was very unpredictable. Overall Rating: 8.5

Psycho

An amazing movie by Alfred Hitchcock about a girl who goes to a hotel and
finds a schizonphrenic man who owns the hotel. This story is way before
it's time. Probably one of the greatest plots ever written. The effects
are outdated but Hitchcock shows his genius. The great kind of scary movie
with not much killing and a great deal of suspense. This movie has one of
the most historic killing scenes ever. Overall Rating: 9.5

Sweet Smell of Success

I thought that this movie had a pretty good plot. A man's ambition to be
successful turns out to ruin his life. He is scandalous and deceptive
in his way that he gets information. These ways that he deceives people
ends up getting him caught by the cops. His boss loses his sister because
of his manipulation to break up her marriage. This movie could have had
a different ending which may not have been any better. Overall Rating: 7.8

A Streetcar Named Desire

I really liked this movie, I wasnt really sure what
Blanche was hiding until the movie was almost over but
when you do you think she is a dirty person. But then
you find that she is sincere and just made a mistake.
Marlon Brando ends up making this sweet girl who lives
in a fantasyland have a breakdown. She just wants
everything to be perfect and get married but Marlon
wont let her be happy. Overall Rating: 8.3

Gone With the Wind

I just simply felt that the only thing really wrong with this movie is that it was too long. All the characters were wonderful and you get to know them all very well. What caught me by surprise was that it didn't have the happy ending that I was expecting. Instead it ended on a different note, although still positive. I was hoping that for once Scarlet would not wait until tomorrow and go after Rhett that day, but that is just not Scarlet O'Hara. Overall Rating: 9.1

Rear Window

I didn't think this movie was very good. I thought
that this mystery had
the potential to be much better but it just fell
short. The ending of the
movie is rather stupid. It probably was suspenseful
at the time. I think
the ending could have been better if James Stewart was
thrown from his rear
window, that would have been ironic. I thought it is
unique how this movie
filmed in one room. Overall Rating: 5.9

Raging Bull

This movie was very slow for awhile but I thought that the boxing and the quest for the title was very interesting. The thing that I didn't like was that everyone always yells at their wives, it seems like a bad life. I don't understand why he let Robinson beat him in the one fight. I guess it was to prove a point. There was no reason to show the part of the movie when he is older. The ending was one of the worst ever and the quote and the end doesn't go with the movie. Just when it got interesting it got stupid. Overall Rating: 8.1
